My work is on display at the Austin International Airport

"Four Corners"
If you are travelling in or out of Austin during the holidays this year..my work will be on display at the Austin Airport along with 3 other encaustic artists at the Eastside Gallery near Gate 8. The show closes January 4th...it's well worth the effort to see it.

Gallery at Museo and it's Review of the Opening in Austin

Local artists Daphne Holland, Kristi Darnell Battani, Marilyn Fenn, Sharon Kyle Kuhn, and Roxi McClosky Morris are exhibiting several original works of ‘encaustic’, a method of painting with wax that predates the roman empire. Any medium is as interesting as the artist makes it, and these artists demonstrated forethought to product with a developed process that is self-evident. Roxi’s gridded process speaks well to her mathematical approach and skilled portraiture, and Sharon’s use of outdated technological storage media was dimensional, timely and interesting. Daphne’s cuts through thick layers of wax, draw the eye along its edges and split thick fields of rich and sometimes translucent color. Wax captures and transforms light in its lighter colors and gently transforms it into a soft glow. The dependence art has on light is nicely visible in encaustic painting.

Encaustic Monotypes

The $75 fee for each class includes all materials (panels, found objects, medium and pigment) and is a hands on experience of embedding materials into hot molten wax..learning how to make your own medium, setting up your studio and information about where to buy supplies. The monotype classes will include printing onto various types of paper with encaustic medium and pigment and though...very exciting and somewhat similar to the experience of painting directly onto a panel..it is surprisingly different. Please email me sharon@sharonkylekuhn.com with your reservations..the classes typically fill rather quickly and are limited to five people per class. I look forward to hearing from you and working with you soon. Contact me for classes in September.
